February = Vanilla

It's February. It's cold where many of us are.  It's a month with a valentine's day.  Scott wanted us to do Avocados (let's do that in another month)... I thought about Chocolate (I mean, I think about it all the time)...but really... here's what I am choosing for us to play with:

  1. I think you should post instructions for "gutting" a vanilla pod. I'm unsure how to do it. Also, I NEED your vanilla biscotti recipe. I still dream about it.

  2. Feel free to use vanilla extract-- but --- if you want to use a real vanilla pod-- you take it, put a slice up the pod lengthwise- then use the tip of your knife to scrape the seeds out.

    Supposedly you can throw the leftover pod in with some sugar and make vanilla sugar- though I've never tried and have no idea if that would work.

    I'll be interested to see if anyone does something savory (or not a baked good). I think I might try a creme brulee or something I've never tried before (if I have a working oven).... oi vey.
